  • This painting evokes the beauty and ever-changing energy of the advent of spring in the Great Northwest. Following my chaos-to-metaphor process, I started with melted crayon on various pieces of paper. Next, I tore out the most provocative and intensely colored pieces, fitting them together where each piece seemed to fit best, adding washes and highlights of acrylic paint to help the pieces conjoin, and pasting them onto art paper. Over time, as I worked, certain vague images began to take on a life of their own: a translucent blue river cut through the center of the painting flowing over rocks and ice. On the left-hand side, a totem-like fish began to emerge, and, on the right, a strange bird took shape, a sort of half-penguin, half-bird with multiple wings, flying over the tundra, the river, and the cracking ice flows. This painting celebrates the power of nature and the energy of renewal.  Suitable for any room in the house.
